What's a good anime for an anime first timer?
By ManOfManyMasks. 18/08/10, 03:43 am |
| Hello, I'm new to both cosplay and anime,I have alot of friends who watch anime and there are so many to choose from I hear.
I've never been a big fan of animation as i've always liked live action movies and so on and never got into it. Though now i'm looking into it as they sound quite cool.
So what I'd like to ask is, What is a good anime to introduce me to the genre? I like almost anything when it comes to genres, like Sci fi, Action, Fantasy, Drama, Romance or anything you can think of.
Thank you for your time taken to read and post! I hope this message finds you well.
P.s. I've watched movies such as Spirited away and howl's moving castle and a few other 'mainstream' movies and really enjoyed them. |

| The first anime I watched (besides the after school cartoons) was Death Note. I didn't even know it was popular. o.O But I would definitely reccomend it for a first anime! It's not too long, and it's just damn good. And being so popular you'll be able to talk to A LOT of people about it. |

| Cowboy Bebop has always been my answer for a good anime for a newcomer. It is a timeless classic and also has a very good dub which is largely considered superior to the original japanese track.
It's also incredibly easy to follow and due to the stand-alone nature of most episodes, it's something good to sit down and watch in your spare time if you're just looking to be entertained but not want to pay close attention to unlike some series. |

| Yup. Cowboy Bebop and Death Note are pretty good starters. What other kind of TV genres do you like though? Could gauge a better guess from there.
If you like Mecha or want to watch some you could also try 0079 Gundam [if you dont mind really old animation] or Macross Frontier. |

| Wolf's Rain if you want to look at good animation, has a healthy plot and is short compaired to most animes ( it's massively depressing tho, hahaa) . And like quite a few peeps have said, Death Note- tho it's word heavy, so you gotta sit down and watch it.
Hrm, Inuyasha? That was my first anime/manga that I watched/ and read :3 has a nice wide range of genres to keep everyone happy, and it's long haha xD |

| Legend of the Overfiend!
I kid, I kid!!! Everything bad you've ever heard about in anime comes from this film. All of it.
On the other hand, everything good there is in anime is compacted into Ghost in the Shell (I <3 the original movie, but I'm told the rest is good too) and Akira. They're older, but amazing. |

| Salior Moon lol.... I mean urh... I think that Full Metal Alchemist would be a good start. It's really good and heaps heaps of depth. Also it doesn't go on forever and ever like Inuyasha or Naruto. xD'; |

| | Death Note and Cowboy Bebop are some of the best you could start off with. They're pretty normal and easy to get into compared with some of the more insane shows. I'm also going to say Gurren Lagann, since it's, well, awesome. |

| The problem with calling anime a 'genre' is that it really isn't. XD There's so much variation, ranging from cutesy to gory to mysterious to XXX; relfecting just about every aspect of society (mainly Japanese, but that's just because of where it's made) the same way as any other kind of medium does.
THAT SAID. I'd second the recommendations for Akira, Death Note (I've only read the manga but the story is good), Evangellion, Ghost in the Shell and Cowboy Bebop. They're all solid and you'll have lots of people to talk to them about. Though Akira, Evangellion and Ghost in the Shell are all dystopian-Japanese future setting they're still different enough that you can enjoy them. If you're after something cutesy try a few episodes of Cardcaptor Sakura or Sailor Moon. They're definitely old but well known.
Personally I'd recommend some Hayao Miyazaki movies- Princess Mononoke, My Neighbour Totoro (a wonderful kids movie that you either love or hate) and Spirited Away. They're all visually stunning. _________________

| Well it depends on what you are after. Comedy, action, supernatural/horror, something light hearted or more serious.
I would definitely recommend Tengan Toppa Gurren Langen, it's an awesome, action packed, feel good anime. Death Note is good too, serious and packed full of twists. Code Geass, one of the best anime out there, it has action, Mechas, drama, shocking twists, totally amazing.
Most of the anime I would recommend tends to be long shounen types, as I have a weakness for those, but some people don't find long shows easy to sit through.
If you want comedy try, Nyan Koi or Lucky Star. Supernatural/Horror: Hellsing, Death Note, Kuroshitsuji, Elfen Lied. Action,/Mecha: Code Geass, TTGL. Serious/drama types: Wolf's Rain. Action: Bleach, Naruto, Inuyasha (These are all really long, some are still ongoing).
There are more genres I could name, but these are types I think will appeal to guys more, although everyone's tastes are different. I hope this helps! ^^ |
