Spraypaint - but fancy stuff!
By Static. 17/03/10, 01:21 pm |
| Hey all - I'm looking for some fairly specific colours of spraypaint, and was wondering if anybody knew where to get more weird, arty colours/finishes. Does the Warehouse stock a really good range, or should I be checking out Spotlight, auto places, etc? I'm basically looking for some thing like a burgundy car, lol - a little bit of a metallic sheen to it, not a flat colour.
THANKS ILU

| oooo~ I had this same question about a week back! The Wharehouse has next to nothing most of the time... but if you want specific Bunnings has an INCREDIBLE range!! Multiple colours at different prices and quality-ness _________________

| There's a skateboard/grafitti store here on high street called Embassy which stocks Montanna spray paint which is good quality with lots of different effects (and itty bitty ones) Do you need it before Chchgeddon? |

| You can always ask a paint shop or auto paint shop to make up a colour, and add metallic to it. So you can specifically match any colour/effect. Of course then you need a compressor and spraygun, from an art shop. But then you can reuse it, and maybe use artists paints as well? In fact you could try blending artists paints to get the simpler colours. |

| | Look around your local area for the best. The Warehouse are not the best at all. Maybe try the paint shops and maybe even try the Net. |

| | My local Mitre 10 had a great range of colours, sizes and finishes - check places like that rather than The Wharehouse/Spotlight and you should get better results. |

| This has been asked a few times in my panels so:
Hie thee to Repco. Duplicolour in little rattle cans to match many cars. They sell lacquer and acrylic enamel which is of so much less prone to flaking than regular enamel spray paint. I used a base of Duplicolour gold and a little bronze for my Leia. We used a purple for Angela's guitar in WellyGeddon last year.
You can also go to hobby stores and look for Tamiya but that tends to be very expensive for little cans.
With airbrushing you have an even greater range of colours as you can mix yourself. |

| EXCELLENT! Thank you so much everyone - I think I will hit Repco as soon as I can; I had a feeling I'd seen my dad with a can-to-match-the-carpaint but wasn't sure. And Supercheap is bollocks.
Thanks everyone! |

| From experience, places like repco/supercheap/the warehouse etc, you have to be cautious about the paint you're buying. I've had encoutered spray paints from these places where dark blue when applied was actually fluro blue, and gold was actually brown.
Some of the more expensive (eg $20-$30+) brand cans don't havde this problem. I found your paint shops (eg Resene, Color Centre) have the best qaulity paints.
Also I should post this somewhere as well, but once you have finished spraying, turn your can upside down and and spray until the vapour turns clear/white, and store your can upside down - it'll stop the nozzle from clogging with paint.
Oh, and the golden rule: many thin coats of paint are better than one or two thick coats of paint.

| | Yes, I learned the unblocking rule the hard way...a few cans were wasted because I failed the clear them properly! Will have to check out what's on offer around the place, I'd really rather not end up wih a fluro sword. -___- |
