Wing schematic feedback?
By Cassiel. 20/02/10, 01:47 am |
| This is hideously complicated and was contrived at about 1:30am so it's probably not going to work. But it's all I've got so far.
http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/7527/hideouslycomplicated.png
I basically want 3 positions, and I wanted the positions to hold without me tying two strings together. I'm still stuck on getting it back to the "flat on my back" position, unless I add yet ANOTHER string, which will just make it more complicated, and I'm not keen to do that.
Feedback is appreciated!

| I've thought over folding wings like that before. If you're using feather (Which I assume you are) then think of it like a fan. Feather on both sides, folding it up and down like that constantly with big wings and gaps like that is most likely to make feather fall of and crumple and go all ugly. I've not actually tried but it's most likely they will.
Otherwise it seems like it'd work apart from the complicatedness x.x |

| Mmm, the only thing that I think I should add is that be careful you do not become so complicated that you shoot your self in the foot. I think moving wings would be awesome, but at what cost - apart from time, just how will the overall creation look and work in the end? I think that to make moving wings as well as make them look really good will be really really difficult (my hats off to anyone who achieves it). Often it is from simplicity that you gain the best results.
Still, I dont want to discourage you, just try and put things in perspective. If anyone were to pull it off, I would be very impressed. Good luck.

| Completely different design, but a pinioned system might do what you want. It won't have quite the same 3 position stages but with the two fixed pinion points it should give you a consistent movement from closed out to fully open.
The only thing then is you would need to control it all from the middle of the back mount, shifting the end up or down depending on how far extended you wanted it.

Edit: Found the main page - http://www.artificeclothing.com/em/shop/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=177 Edit2: http://www.jprishea.com/jpr/index.html
It looks cool, but probably overkill for what you're wanting to acheive, and you certainly don't want air driven.
Another one using a simpler design is: http://community-2.webtv.net/wingsandthings1/WingsandCostumes/page2.html
You could probably pinch a few ideas from them, but i think incorporating a second arm in a fixed design could be one way to take some of the drawstrings out. _________________ SPCC - Helping Promote Cosplay Since 2009 - www.cosplay.org.nz & here SPCC Wiki - Need Cosplay Supplies, Know where to get them? - help update our Wiki! 2010 Cosplay Calendar - On Sale Now - Look Here! - Now only $10 $5 Wellygeddon 2011 Photos

| heh, i just found the main page for it too, edited the link in now. It's not quite what she's looking for, but the photos show the design pretty clearly, so some pinching of ideas may be in order. :) _________________ SPCC - Helping Promote Cosplay Since 2009 - www.cosplay.org.nz & here SPCC Wiki - Need Cosplay Supplies, Know where to get them? - help update our Wiki! 2010 Cosplay Calendar - On Sale Now - Look Here! - Now only $10 $5 Wellygeddon 2011 Photos |

| Have you seen this: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=E2A1DF90AB087DF0
I don't know if it's quite the same - I'm not mechanically minded! but it's an extentive tutorial on folding wings. |

| @Fleyer -- You make a valid point, I shall keep that in mind~
@Kitten -- Yeah, that it a point... I was thinking about making a small model to see if this will actually work.
@JPwise -- Whoo, thank you for the links!
@Mischa -- Yes, I've looked at that but it's not quite the look I'm aiming for :3 |

| I'm not really keen on giving out advice any more, but...
Without getting too hideously complicated and expensive, you possibly could achieve somthing close or similar using plastic/cardboard pipe with a few angled cuts and elastic ribbon on the inside as your "arm bones", and possible some dowel or balsa supports losely riveted together. Just thread your string(s) down the "bones" and attach it to the top of your end "bone" or the top or all the tops of all your bones |
