Masterclass series at Armageddon 2012 By neimhaille. 27/12/11, 09:38 am |
| Hello all,
Bill has said there is space and time for us to expand the Masterclasses into a regular series. What this means is that each event can host a more specific series of presentations.
I have decided on one theme already and that is Con Safe Prop Weapons. ;)
I am looking for themes and speakers from the community.
So ideas for themes for the following events:
April: Hamilton and Wellington June: Christchurch October: Auckland

| Keen! All kinds of keen!
Edit: Oh, theme idea - "wings, armour, and other things that need some thought into how they're going to stay on your body". Or, "Attachments!". |

| ^I'd love to see you guys do something on attachments, they always have me stumped! =D
My other suggestions for theme are fabric (I don't know if you did anything on it at Auck since I had to leave ten min into the panel to catch a flight, but it'd be nice to see something on where to source different fabrics, how to work with harder ones (like leather) and how to pick the right fabric for each thing above the 'heavy/lightweight, matte/shiny, stretch/non-stretch' level-- such as in more historical garments or other specialty situations) or something on making costume prostheses like ears, tentacles, horns, spikes, etc.
The former because I'd like to know how to improve my choice and use of fabric, the latter because it's a field that I want to try out for costumes in the future but I don't feel much like stumbling into blindly. |

Re: Masterclass series at Armageddon 2012 By neimhaille. 27/12/11, 02:53 pm |
| *excellent :)
Defo keen for a make up/appliances and doing it all safely one ;) I have learnt a few things the hard way ;) There may be people with foam and silicon experience I can ping ;)
And fabrics, yes! I think this could be a combo fabrics and how to manipulate them with cutting, sewing and colouring?
So with the wings and armour and such this would be more along the lines of practicality and wearing? Could probably work it to think about support in a wider sense?
Just as a sort of pencil in so I can let Bill know: Safe props for Hamilton Appliances and bodyart (essentially) for Wellington Fabric manipulation for ChCH Support and rigging for Auckland (eg magically floating armour and how to make it real)
Pretty sure I can find people for each city so we have a mix of talking, show and tell and maybe a spot of demo. |

| If you'll have me again I would be keen to talk about Project/time management!
Topic ideas that haven't already been mentioned -How to dye! - All about clays - the difference between sculpty, fimo, cernit , paper clay, non firing clays for moulding..and how to use them. - Painting techniques - how to make different surface effects - Fabric embellishment - embroidery, screen printing, hand painting, stencils, applique etc - How to pack cosplays aka how not to get arrested trying to bring a katana through the flight gate, or open your luggage to find your prop has turned to dust and ashes.

Yes! Been doing this for 20 years and it is always frustrating as heck ;) Can add this to the "fabric and all the ways to use it" class

Great idea! Yes, and the pros and cons of using each :)

- - Painting techniques - how to make different surface effects
And the tools to work with each... okay.. I'm starting to see a better way of ordering each of these classes :)
- Quote :

This is where I can bust out my "one needle and some thread and a million hours and you can make anything" sort of talk. Breaking out photos of mantua's ;)

Ooh! How to modify a commercial pattern+fitting tips? Yes... will definitely fit in with the safety theme. A safe prop won't get confiscated from you ;)

Ah yes and another great one for the fabric one ;)
Alright. So basically how to make all the things ;)
Just kidding. I will email Bill though and ask if we can have 90 minute blocks on the second stage as I don't think there is room on the main stage :) |

| Maybe something with fibreglassing? It's something I've always wanted to try but just not sure where to start/source... Plus I hear it's messy and tricky, would love to get some tips from someone who knows what they're doing. I'm also with Mischa on the painting/clay tutorials. Oh, and paper craft! Such a handy skill when you know how to build strong things out of paper, plus I hear that is a fiberglass base for some armor, so it kind of ties in :)

| How exciting! I love watching the Master classes every year. It sounds like everything has been covered.
I would particularly be interested to learn about prosthetics and using wax-based molds and such to make scars etc. |

Appliances and bodyart (essentially) for Wellington
If you're looking for speakers in the cosplay community, I have a decent amount of experience in body art and sfx make-up- though more on the side of burns/injuries/aging than latex/silicone appliances (I have done a little bit of life casting, but nowhere near as much as others you'll be able to find).
I just want to hear someone convince the audience about the importance of PAX and pros-aide, haha. |

Re: Masterclass series at Armageddon 2012 By neimhaille. 11/01/12, 04:02 am |
| lol! Yes. PA all the way through out that horrible spirit gum! For a product that looks and smells for all the world like paint flow medium and at first feels like it, it sure does grab!
I think a good approach will be to cover a wide range of bases as with all things there are specific needs for different occasions (film set, theatre, body art, conventions...) and some products and techniques are more suitable than others :)
Right so it looks like the basic breakdown of classes is all set so I'll get them to Bill and they'll be on the site :) And then as time goes on more specific info can be detailed :)

Re: Masterclass series at Armageddon 2012 By neimhaille. 29/01/12, 10:53 am |
| Just sent Bill the list so it should be on site soon: Hamilton: Cosplay as Illusion part 1: Costumes and props in anime/manga and video games do not have to follow real world problems such as gravity. Often they are difficult to travel with or wear safely around others. Our presenters have all created props that are safe for wearing and travel yet are impressive and often relatively cost effective.
Wellington: Cosplay as Illusion part 2: Often in games and movies humanoid characters are of the most interesting and inspiring to recreate. But just how to make and wear prosthetics and appliances can be out of the experience for most. Our presenters will share their experiences with working in the home to create facial and body prosthetics safely and effectively at home.
Christchurch: Fabricating Cosplay: Fabric is one of the most misunderstood materials to work with in cosplay, our presenters explain how to identify and look for fabrics in stores that don't always know what they have. They will also present some quick patterning techniques as well as how to manipulate fabric that is almost right into being just right.
Auckland: Cosplaying Giants: It is not just props that can be larger than life, often costume pieces involve oversized armour or wings or even legs that bend backwards. Once again our presenters share their experiences with making and wearing costumes that need special support and construction to wear.
So, I can talk about something in every class but of course this is a community directed series so please email at armageddon.cosplay@gmail.com if you or someone you know would be interested. Please keep in mind I will be looking for people comfortable with talking in public but can also keep to a time limit :) Depending on the numbers for each class is how long we will each have :)
Covered most of what was brought up here and the topics not directly covered (clay types, fixing mistakes) can be covered in there somehow... I'm sure they can...
