The Butterfly Effect/Donnie Darko
By Alatyr. 01/10/09, 11:27 am |
| I just wanted to make a topic saying how amazingly awesome these two movies are.
THEY ARE AMAZINGLY AWESOME.
If you have not seen either of these, then go out and rent/buy/steal them. I watched Donnie Darko at about 10pm, then stayed up 'til 4am afterwards thinking..
"Wth." And then went Snowboarding at 7am. Fun times.
But yes! GREAT MOVIES! So watch them, or feel my displeasure. |

| I quite liked Donnie Darko, and didn't mind the Butterfly Effect. I wish that both of them went a bit further into the ideas they portrayed, but... They're movies, not science doco's Both very enjoyable! |

| | Yes. If they we're adapted into books, where the ideas could be further explored, i might just explode. |

| | Donnie Darko is rather fantastic, but I found the Butterfly Effect a tad shallow. |

| The butterfly effect is about this fellow who had blackouts when he was young, and then when he was older found he could go back through time and return to the time he had the blackouts by reading his journals and change history.
How do you mean shallow? If that sounds like an accusation it's not, i'm just wondering :) |

... There are several books out there with the same themes, and even more thesis'! They're not as entertaining, of course. Lots of stuff on the interwebs. Even youtube has a lot of very cool viewing if you're into it. And, thankfully, a lot of them are explained in a way that you don't have to be an astrophysicist to understand. Carl Sagan vids are win. Example. Also interesting is Imagining the Tenth Dimension. There's waaay more in depth stuff out there, but this is a good starting point if you're interested in it.

| I kinda mean that it didn't explore the ideas it presented in enough depth- there was so much more they could have done with that movie.
Oh, and don't see the second film. Watched it one summer holiday when I was bored out of my mind. Quite horrible. Just like a rehash of the first film, but with more melodrama and worse acting. |

I totally agree with you on that. A lot of people aren't really interested in going too far into it, though... most at the movies want a little chill down the spine and that's it. It's a pity there aren't more movies made for nerds :]
I just had a thought; if you guys like this sort of thing, you should check out Time Crimes. It's a spanish movie(subbed) about time travel. It's not hugely related to these movies, but time travel is sweet so yay! Low budget and not a lot of box office appeal, but the story is sooo good, lots of thrills and it... actually makes sense!
Projekt, only if zombie Carl Sagan is my maid of honour. If you can manage that then, sure! |
