Heat and Bond
Post By kelseyketchum. 09/04/09, 04:57 pm

Came across this today...has anyone had experience with it? Is it worth trying or should I run far, far away? Do you even know what I'm talking about >.-

I want to use it for putting patterns on a cloak...

You can get it at any fabric store. It is pretty useful but depending on what type of fabric you're trying to stick on, it can get pretty annoying.

Heat and bond is used for appliquing, and is a good technique for adding patterns to things. :) Here's an awesome tutorial that should answer your questions. :3 http://taeliac.deviantart.com/art/Tutorial-How-to-Applique-95085013

Thank you <3 That tutorial is really helpful!

Any specific material I shouldn't use with it?

Hmm... Not that I know of, though I've never used it personally. Ask Taeliac - she's really good at responding to questions. Very Happy But at a guess - stretch (it won't stretch after you've heat n bonded it) and fabric that melts under an iron? 8D

Synthetic material that'll melt if you apply heat. It warps it. Swimsuit fabric because it won't stick...

This is all from personal experience.

Silk too I think.

The thing I'm making is probably too big to be washed anyway :3

Depends on exactly what it is that is being used :) Heat n Bond is a specific product that well stick to practically everything, I mean everything. It is essentially a sheet of glue, no backing just glue that melts with the heat of the iron into the fabric.
I've used it to stick silk organza to velvet, several layers of cotton to more cotton, cotton calico to poly/viscose.. it is incredible stuff.

Now the usual iron on interfacing you can get at a sewing store.. meh. It really is pretty bad. It's pressure not heat that helps it stick so you really need a very strong arm and strong ironing board. In fact forgo the board altogether and use layers of wool on a desk with a layer of calico over that instead. No steam. Ever.

You can also get stretch iron on interfacings which you can use in jackets and over shaped items. I like to use that a fair bit :)

Cotton dot fabric is amazing though. It's a woven cotton abric but the fusible aspect is arranged as dots all over the fabric and it does stick. I think because the amount in each dot is enough to melt and stick through the weave of both the interfacing and the base fabric.

Oh and silk is fine to use interfacings on (iron on or sew in. Silk can take far more heat than an iron suggests. Just use the good stuff. Hate to say it but Spotlight usually carries the good stuff.
