Erm, its not Higurashi...

It's by the same writer (Ryukishi07) though.

It actually helps explain some of Higurashi, if I'm not mistaken.

Well the general consensus is by comparison to the game, the Higurashi anime failed hard. But standalone, I thought it was very good, much like how I think the Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro anime is good standalone but is pretty much a fail when compared to the manga.

So basically I'd reserve judgment for when the anime actually screens... like a normal person should. Lousy internets and their deeming everything to be lousy until proven otherwise and then they'll act as if all the complaints never happened, case in point Dark Knight.
