- Just a quick warning. Given the recent series of headlining crimes involving air rifles and the sort be very very careful with any props you own and how you handle them.
Do not wave realistic looking weapons about and especially not at people who aren't expecting it, save posing for photos (they happen often enough as members of the public do like taking photos) and in secure environments. Just be sensible and think how your actions are likely to be taken, not how you want them to be taken.
Yes what's happening in the media is an extreme however given the publicity of these incidents the public is going to be more cautious, and will not react so positively to guns being waved about.
The contest rule involving projectile weapons especially is not going anywhere. No exceptions. For anyone who doesn't know what this is referring to, look at the front page of today's Herald. :C Or any of the other incidents over the last couple of months. |

| I have no idea. o_O I'm torn - I think I might bring mine but leave it in Kev's car except for the KHR photoshoot. I think, as long as you put a garish orange cap on the end *needs to do that herself* and are careful it should be okay? >.> I don't know... |

| I'm still planning on bringing mine, although it is actually an air gun, but it's not going to be loaded. Just have to not attact the attention of security or cops I think. :/ |

| Hey guys, thanks for your consideration, there was actually a very close call a couple of years back and the armed offenders squad was very nearly sent in to Auckland Armageddon!
The police actually rang the organisers after a call from a member of the public was "concerned".
So I have been asked to pass on the message that if the police do get called out any and all expenses, including court and overtime costs, gets passed on to the person with the real looking weapon.
So it's really a good idea to play it safe!
So once again thank you to all those who have understood why the rule is in place and have worked around it. It makes the entire con that little more stressfree for many of us ;)
Thanks :) |

Thanks :) I'm actually sort of wondering here...
My intended cosplay for 'Geddon next year involves a prop that I have here, a fullsize gunblade (in the final fantasy 8 style) made of real steel. I'm thinking it would be very, very easy for a complete and utter idiot concerned member of the public to think I was planning a beheading.
I really, really, want to bring the sword to geddon. It is blunt, but I still think it might be taken amiss. What sort of thing would you reccommend to avoid any confusion? I am toying with the idea of bringing a length of cloth to wrap the blade in whenever I am not using it for a photoshoot, but I don't really know if that will suffice...
Any advice would be appreciated. |

| Try googling the NZ Police Weapons safety guidlines (or something like that) maybe? I know there are regulations somewhere you can follow - I remember discussing it with a friend when we were filming our medieval horror film trailer... |

Hmm...according to the information I have found, it seems like cosplay would be a 'legitimate use' for a sword (especially since it isn't sharp), though I'm not really sure Geddon counts an a controlled circumstance...quite the opposite, in fact. (Opinion based off the bottom of this page: http://www.police.govt.nz/service/firearms/swords-knives.html )
Still, I think an opaque cloth wrapping (black, to match the leather on the costume) would be okay. I would quite like the opinion of an organizer on this though. |

Cosplay is the same thing, different context. I think it would be fine as long as you don't let anyone else get their hands on it. You could probably have it unsheathed if you wanted, as long as you had a way to keep it physically attached to your person at all times - so if someone tried to nick off with it, they'd take you with it. I suggest making a sheath for it.
I would ask on the pulp expo forums - might be more likely to get an organiser opinion there, as I imagine Bill will check the forums soon coz of the event that's just been. |

It is not idiotic to be concerned about anyone carrying steel weapons in public, especially by someone not specifically trained in their use and in a proper demonstration. It is not just a concern for extremes. People are stupid in crowds. They walk the wrong way and they also like to steal things and especially like to target those in costume. All it takes is one kid to walk the wrong way and the blade to be in the path for something to go completely and utterly awful. Think of what the media will do to all cosplayers with one single incident?
Also you will not be allowed to use the prop in the contest. |

Also you will not be allowed to use the prop in the contest. Fair point that I suppose. I'm just sick to death of the climate of fear the entire frakking world has been caught up in since 9/11. I'm a little bitter about it. My apologies, it set the tone of that post off what I had intended.
I won't be entering the contest with that costume anyway (the thought of working with leather makes me cringe), but might I be able to use it as a prop in a skit? Come to think of it, I have a better idea for a Monday cosplay anyway, nevermind XD
I think as long as I have some sort of cover for it, be it a sheath or a wrapping, I could probably avoid causing a panic. That being said, some people are far, far too concerned in general nowadays. |

There was an article on the news about how adults are way more protective of children these days than what they were thirty years ago. I don't like it how if a child has to walk a small distance to get home from school, the parent worries non-stop. I can understand why (NZ getting more violent and such), but it still annoys me nontheless. |

That's a worse idea considering it's easier to think it to be a real weapon if it's being concealed. |
