You do know that the Hadron Collider has already been tested and we're all still here right? See, world did not end and all the panic was for nothing. I've heard that some people have committed suicide prior to the tests convinced the world would end and opted to take quick painless death or something rather than risk getting sucked into a black hole. Sad, sad people and their lack of scientific knowledge.

Hate to break it to you, but the test of the LHC was one that had zero chance of anything. The REAL test, the one using enough energy to simulate the big bang (or create a mini-bloack hole) isn't until October 21st.

Still. I don't believe anything will happen. Anyway, death by black hole would be interesting. Might be cool to experience time dilation in the moments leading up to my death.

Heh, yeah I was going to point that out aswell. So far all they've done is send a beam first one way around it, and then the other way around it to make sure the path was clear. When they sent both beams to do the colliding part is where it gets interesting. :)

Found out a fun little peice of trivia about our favourite LHC today. Apparently, when they are done firing protons around and whatnot, to discarge the beam they route it down a dead-end tube and into a huge block of carbon, which is heated from room temp to 700 degrees C in an instant. It dischares with so much energy that, if the stop-block was made of copper not carbon every discarge would burn a 40 meter hole in the block! 40 meters of burned copper...thats a hell of a lot of energy. Still, the proton are moving at 99.99999% of the speed of light, so i guess it can be expected.

Not really important, but I found it interesting.

On a side note, being so close to the speed of light raises some interesting questions.....as far as I am aware, relitivety states that as a particle approaches the speed of light, it begins to take on infinite mass (hence why it is impossible for an object to reach the speed of light). Does this happen to the protons in the LHC, or have they devised some way around it? or is it not an issue? or am I wrong entirely?

Heh, yeah I hadn't seen the bit about the carbon block, but sounds funky. :) Guess they have bbq cookups on the cooling block of carbon. Razz

Although on a sidenote I wonder if they get any diamonds as byproduct? Would certainly get the head, possibly the pressure from the sudden expansion and the energy applied, so I wonder.

But um, yeah, been quite a few years since I did physics, but that doesn't sound right. the whole e=mc2 thing. the momentum would increase at a fixed rate relative to it's speed, and the energy released at an impact would be relative to its mass and speed, but as far as I'm aware it's mass is still fixed. Past that you start getting into the esoteric stuff and quantum physics, which is something I still need to read up on more. ;) That said I still think faster than light is entirely possibly, just don't ask me to quantify it. I think of it something along the lines of the speed of sound. hehe.

Anyway, MAJOR PANIC! I started early in the year on my competition cosplay, so that helps a little to buffer against all the procrastination I did after that XD

But still I have so many random bits to do that I haven't even started yet. And I still need to make my bro's cosplay (two kimono that won't be hard and pants that I might just get him to buy lol) and sort out my hall cosplays.

Although guess what? I have no moneys, so that might cut down on how many days I can go to armageddon, especially since I still need to buy some stuff for my hall cosplay. And I have to buy that stuff since I don't think I can get a wig for the costume I was gonna wear that's already made (Hollow Ichigo).

GAH!

I dunno, now that I think about it I'm actually fine. Just gotta wait for my wig to get here and I'm sweet. I also gotta work out where I'm gonna stay for Geddon since I haven't the foggiest if my mother is coming with me or not.
