HBO's A Song of Ice and Fire/A Game of Thrones
Post By CamusCanDo. 16/04/10, 04:54 pm

Being new to the forum I thought it'd be a good idea to start a thread on something I like and see if there are any other fans here. The thread being about HBO's television adaptation of George R R Martin's fantasy series 'A Song of Ice and Fire'.

For those not in the know the book series is comprised of 4 novels, and a few novellas which have been turned into comics. Seven books have been planned, with the fifth being constantly delayed/pushed back for the past five years due to the writer having issues with finishing said book off.

The books are a series with a realistic fantasy setting focusing on character intrigue and unique gritty world-building. I highly recommend them to anyone who loves a good entertaining, albeit depressing at times read. And really, who doesn't.

Anyway, back to the television series. Anyone here been keeping up to date on this? HBO has greenlit the first season, with nine episodes and a pilot. I'm all kinds of excited for this, no one else but HBO could pull off a show of this magnitude.

So, any fans out there? If so, here's a few images:

A promo pic from the pilot, supposed to be from the prologue from the first book.

Hahaha! I thought about starting this thread so many times, but I've already spammed up the different threads in the lit. forum with ASoIaF posts...

I am such a huge fan, and I am so very excited for this series. It's actually overtaking my excitement for A Dance with Dragons (the next book in the series, for those reading this that aren't massive fans) because there's always updates and tangible progress.

I have to say, I absolutely love the casting. Sean Bean?! They got Sean Bean. Unbelievable. And Iain Glen as Jorah Mormont... man. It gave me nerd spazzes for days.

I can't wait to see more progress on the show, I'm following it very closely.

Also you have no idea how happy I am that another ASoIaF fan has joined the forum 8D

I'm glad I was able to get such a big fan as yourself on my first post, yay HBO's A Song of Ice and Fire/A Game of Thrones Icon_biggrin I actually started re-reading the series for the first time since I read them in my early teens. Admitedly I was reading them to get geared up for the televison series, but as I was mowing through them I started to remember why I loved them years ago.

I feel exactly the same about the televison series as opposed to ADWD, at least there is actual progress happening. No hate on Martin though, I have faith in the dude.

Oh hell yeah, when I first saw the cast list and saw Sean Bean I knew the series was going to be unbelievably amazing. And ohmygawd Peter Dinklage is going to be a great Tyrion. If anyone has the acting chops to pull him off it's totally Dinklage.

You're probably following it as well, but I'll post it for any other fans out there that are interested, but this is the blog I mostly follow for updates and whatnot:

Aw man, I just wrote out a huge post and it got eaten by the forum. Let me try this again...

Yes, I am a huge ASoIaF nut! I started the series about four and a half years ago when I finished high school, and haven't looked back. I've read the first two in the series either four or five times (twice in a row when I was first introduced to the series by my partner) and the rest a few times as well. I usually get to some point in the year when I'm out of books to read and turn to this series.

Agh, yes, Peter Dinklage! It's going to be the role of a lifetime for him, I'm so pumped to see him as Tyrion! Who else... oh, Lena Headey as Cersei will be interesting! I hope her and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (I can't believe I remember the entire casts' names off hand... wow) as Jaime have good chemistry. Okay, so clearly I'm psyched about the entire cast. It's like a nerdy dream come trueee!

Oh, and still on casting, were you at Auckland Armageddon last year to see Jason Momoa? I somehow managed to swallow my nerves and ask him about A Game of Thrones at his panel (hey, one AGoT question to ten Stargate Atlantis questions isn't bad!), then he did the haka he did for his casting interview... He'll certainly make an imposing Khal Drogo. The man definitely has presence!

All the kids look great too, especially Maisie as Arya. Perfect! It's awesome to see her getting into her Needlework Very Happy

Winter Is Coming is a great blog, I also like the A Song of Ice and Fire forums (though I mostly just lurk these days) and GRRMs livejournal Not a Blog. There's a few Facebook pages I follow as well, because it's right there and I don't have to go digging for info.

Yes, it's great to see another fantasy fan with the same taste!

Re: HBO's A Song of Ice and Fire/A Game of Thrones
Post By CamusCanDo. 17/04/10, 12:04 pm

Right now I'm into the last 100 pages of A Feast for Crows. I never read it when it first came out so this is my first time. I actually don't even have a good explination for not reading it all those years ago other than I had heard people from forums complain that it was just filler, a few friends had said the same as well. After that I just never picked it up again.

I can't believe I listened to those people!

I love reading POVs from Cersei and Brienne. I especially liked the chapter where Pod catches up with Brienne, that was such a good little twist. It took me back to when I had never read the books before and every chapter was a surprise. In that respect I'm glad I never got around to reading it until now.

Haha! I've only recently gotten to the point where I can rattle off the names off the top of my head. Headey and Coster-Waldu are going to be a treat to watch. Their relationship, along with Eddard and Catelyn, are the ones I'm wanting to see how they're translated on televison. Also can't wait to see the Strak kids as well. Ahh, I'm just over all pumped for this! I hope there's some kind of teaser or trailer at this years Comic-Con too!

I was supposed to go that Armageddon but something came up last minute and I had to can it. I'm totally gutted I didn't make it now though! Although I think at that point I didn't know Mamoa was going to be cast as Drogo, but still, JEALOUS!

I thought it was great that Martin actually gave Maisie a replica Needle. Things like that make you know a show is heading towards a great direction with casting and whatnot.

Seeing that you're a fan of The Walking Dead from your other posts, what are your opinions so far about the tv series picked up by AMC? I can always make a new thread for that too I guess HBO's A Song of Ice and Fire/A Game of Thrones Icon_biggrin

A Feast for Crows might actually be my favourite book. Brienne and Jaime are probably my two favourite characters, and I'll admit I didn't really miss reading about Dany. I disliked both- especially Jaime, of course- when they were first introduced but my heart was well and truly stolen by the time I finished AFfC! Urgh. Hahaha.

Yes, I loved Cersei's chapters, too! She really is paranoid and crazy, not just evil. And I liked reading about Dorne, too. The ending of the last chapter... I had no idea that was going to happen! I was gobsmacked. It was great. Oh, and all the Iron Islands chapters! AND SAM IN OLD TOWN. OH, MAN.

Yeah, I loved AFfC Very Happy

Oh gosh, some sort of teaser at Comic Con would make me so happy! I kinda of wish the pilot would get leaked, just so we could get a peek at what it all looks like. The shooting locations look beautiful.

I followed the casting and pilot stuff obsessively, and was looking at online info pretty much every day as the announcements were being made, so I remember all the names, heh. It was so exciting.

It must be a dream come true for Martin to see his series being handled so lovingly (and the guys that really fought for it to be taken up, David and Dan, are huge fans), and by HBO, even!

Oh, man, The Walking Dead... I have too much to say on that subject to take over this thread- in case any other ASoIaF/fantasy fans come in out of the woodwork here.

I never really disliked Jaime, but after his time with Brienne from Riverrunn to Kings Landing he'd changed drastically from how I percieved him. Martin did what he does best with Jaime, takes a 1-dimensional character and totally turns him into something else.

I actually forgot to add in my last post how much I'm enjoying the Dorne chapters. I didn't think I'd like them as much as I do. It's such a different culture from Westeros, but not totally different that it's like what we see in Dany's chapters.

It never occured to me until now how awesome it would be to cosplay a character from ASoIaF HBO's A Song of Ice and Fire/A Game of Thrones Icon_biggrin

I've said it once and I'll keep saying it. No one else but HBO could've handled something as big as ASoIaF.

Hah! Well I might have to make a Walking Dead thread after all!
I'm at the point where I check winteriscoming at least twice a day now.

Yeah, I heard that so many people despised the Dorne chapters. I'm not really sure why, they seemed just as interesting as anything else? Maybe it's because it introduced yet another manipulative female character into the mix.

And of course;

Quote :
I am Darkstar, and I am of the night.

Then he cuts up the face of a little girl, what a hero.

It would be sososo awesome to cosplay an ASoIaF character, but you'd have to be way into your medieval clothing (or armour!) stuff. I've thought about cosplaying as Arianne because she's the only one close to my age that isn't six feet tall and built like a bear (as much as I love Brienne and the Mormont girl). It will be great to see what people do once the series comes out Very Happy

HNNNG if only I was younger, I love Meera and that would be a cosplay I would be so keen to do. Yeah, a little old and not small enough to do her, though D:

I think 'The Captain of the Guard' is one of Martin's most beautifully written chapters ever. It's a clever look into the lives of the royals through the eyes of a very complex guardsman. So gooooooood.

I know I shouldn't think it, but ehhh, she's a Lannister, what ya gonna do about 'em? HBO's A Song of Ice and Fire/A Game of Thrones Icon_biggrin

I've thought more than once about cosplaying a Black Brother. Even though I'm not his age if I was to ever cosplay a knight it would have to be Jorah.

Hmmm, Melisandre maybe?

Yes, that was me! And then he was like 'ARE YOU FILMING THIS?! IS THIS GONNA GO ON THE INTERNET YOU GET HOME?! PUT IT DOWN. PUT. IT. DOWN'

I almost peed myself, dude is huuuge, haha. He was really lovely, though. Did you get to meet him after/photos or anything? He was so nice when we met him at the photo area, and he seemed really... excited. About everything Very Happy

to CamusCanDo,
Captain of the Guard... is that the one from Hotah's point of view? Hotah was a great addition to the lineup, I hope we see more than just a little more from/about him.

BUT BUT. IT'S MYRCELLA. She seems so sweet. Like Tommen, but not so derpy.

Oh! If you ever do decide to cosplay as a black brother, let me know, my boyfriend has been thinking about it for a while, too. A couple of Nights Watch men would be pretty cool to see! People may well think you're just a couple of dudes in black stuff, but at least you'll know Very Happy

Yeah, I've DEFINITELY thought about Melisandre. But man, she gives me the heebiejeebies. If I ever do, it probably will end up being her (as Arianne is also meant to be very short and errr... yeah). But Mel is just. so. squicky.

Oh, well Very Happy It would be interesting to cosplay some one like her for a change.

I miss Khal Drogo now HBO's A Song of Ice and Fire/A Game of Thrones 88827

That's the one! I especially liked the inclusion of his axe-monk religion. Definitely need more Dorne-centric chapters in ADWD.

SHE IS THE PRODUCT OF INCEST. But yeah, I guess she does more than put wax on letters.

Oh man, I will totally let you know. I assume this would be for Auckland Armageddon? I'm planning on making to this years one, dunno if I'll be cosplaying though. Depends who I can get to come with me. But if I do I'll be sure to let you know.

Yeeeah, Melisandre was kinda my last option. There's not a ton of warrior women in ASoIaF, but she's just as good HBO's A Song of Ice and Fire/A Game of Thrones Icon_biggrin Dany would be pretty sweet too.

MYRCELLA, SHE ALSO PLAYS CHESS. Or the Westerosi version of it, anyway. And lets the sick Martell kid win, awww.

We're going to next years Wellington Armageddon, too! He's already full up for this years Auckgeddon, I think, heh.

I actually dislike Dany, I don't think I could bring myself to cosplay her. Maybe if I could make some dragons or something (because I would totally get over my dislike for that), but I'm not skilled enough for that sort of thing.

All the women of ASoIaF are crazy, bizarrely huge or tiny... Maybe I'll just do Loras instead Razz

But oh man, that was a awesome little bit to see of Momoa. I am definitely behind him as Khal Drogo after that. Totally seems like a rad-as hell guy as well.

If you don't mind me asking why don't you like Dany? But fair enough, I wouldn't want to cosplay Stannis or Tywin if we're doing characters we don't care for HBO's A Song of Ice and Fire/A Game of Thrones Icon_biggrin

Doing a zombie Catelyn would be pretty awesome. Hahah Loras! Actually, having a cape of flowers would look cool too.

I was so nervous asking that question (which is weird, usually I'm pretty ballsy when it comes to that sort of thing). It was kind of like a 'OMG, HE'S DROGO OHSHI-' moment. He really is a bro'.

I just never really connected with Dany the way I did with pretty much every other POV character. It's not so much because she's away from all the stuff happening in Westeros, she just doesn't hold my interest, I guess. I llike what's happening around her -and I like Jorah and uhh... the old guy who Joffrey kicked out, Selmy was it?- just not her. I don't really have a better reason than that, hah. Also she's too young for me to cosplay anyway Very Happy

Oh... man... zombie Catelyn. How did I not think of that :0 UnCat cosplay! That would be freaking sweet, I'm totally putting that on my list of characters :3

Haha! Well he seemed to like the question. I was always ehh about Momoa playing Drogo. Not because I don't like him as an actor or anything, it's just because he dies pretty early on. Now I'm gutted he won't be part of the main cast! Which I guess is something I should get used to with this series HBO's A Song of Ice and Fire/A Game of Thrones Icon_biggrin

Actually I think that's how I was with her on my first read through. But fair enough though. I'm still iffy with the Davos chapters myself, but less so than I used to be.

So excited.

We're having a gathering with a few other CNZers (most of whom haven't read the books) for the first episode!

By sheer luck I won one of the promo posters from their Facebook fanpage as well. HBO are going all out with their marketing for this!

Seeing if I can roster up some friends real quick to watch it. Got my brother-in-law into the books, pretty sure he's nearly finished the second.

I think I've failed miserably trying to get my friends excited for the show because I'm mostly just ABLOOBLOOFANTASYBUTNOTOHDAMNPLZWATCHITABLOO.

And jealous as! Got a link of the promo poster?

Every time people are here I foist it on them. They have had to like it by force Very Happy I also bribed them by promising to make lemon cakes!

This is the poster. I couldn't believe they still sent it when I said I lived in New Zealand. Unexpected!
