Investigating temporal anomalies in your area By Augur. 15/08/11, 04:10 am |
| My lords and ladies and gentle-beings of all astral planes and alternate dimensions, from past, present, and future, and from the multifarious planets of our solar system and beyond, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Ernest Roebuck III, only son of Earl Roebuck of Chester, Knight Commander of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Fellow of the Royal Society, Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, and currently on Royal Commission as Surveyor-General of the antipodean islands known as Aotearoa / New Zealand, responsible for the establishment of trigonometric stations and cartography for the island group. I have an honorary Doctorate of Applied Luminiferous Aether Sublimation from the Edwardian University of Science.
However, all that said, I do not normally introduce myself quite so formally. Although I am officially known as Sir Ernest Roebuck III, KCB, FRS, FRGS, I am usually just referred to as "Augur". I took on this mononym upon reaching the antipodes, as I found that the local inhabitants scorned me for such a pretentious moniker. In order to gain the trust of the colonials, the military, and the indigenous United Tribes of Aotearoa (UToA), I have rejected the honours bestowed on me by Her Majesty, at least whilst I draw breath in the antipodes.
I am indebted to my patron and former tutor, Sir Richard Francis Burton of Oxford, to my father Earl Roebuck II, to my uncle Sir Tory Eversham of the Eversham Airship Company of Portsmouth, to my mentor Sir George Everest, and also to my good friend, John Carter of Virginia, in the New World. I also count among my friends many Tharks, Orovars, Okarians, and even Kaldanes of Barsoom, about which I shall not speak more of for now, but any who wish to may ask me further about Barsoom and I shall be only too pleased to tantalize you with tales of my travels there.
My uncle, Sir Tory Eversham, has sent me his finest vessel, the Airship Halberg, to conduct my scientific research aboard, a task which involves creating topographical maps of these antipodean islands, as well as establishing trigonometric stations throughout the colony. However, a recent missive from the Home Office has revealed that my true mission in the antipodes is somewhat more sinister. It seems that there have recently been developing some tears in the fabric of time-space, or eddies in the time-space continuum, if you prefer. These temporal anomalies have been appearing all over the globe, and the Halberg has been tasked by the Home Office to investigate those anomalies that we encounter in the antipodes, and to report back on each one that we find, in the hope of amassing sufficient data to locate the source of these eddies. We have been given the scientific resources under the guise of geodetic data analysis and charting, and will receive from the Home Office the coordinates of new temporal anomalies in our vicinity, in order to investigate them. Our scientific research vessel, the Airship Halberg, may also be called upon for other duties as we travel around these antipodean islands, such as diplomatic missions, trade, and warding off sky pirates to keep the "long white cloud" above Aotearoa / New Zealand safe for civil aviation.
Well, that's my in-character introduction, now for some OOC stuff. I'm Augur, a member of the fledgling Auckland Steampunk Association, and I came along to Aether and Iron at MOTAT in July 2011, where I held a meeting and played host to Lady Helen Steampunk and Agent Darling of the League of Victorian Imagineers (Oamaru). I've also recently started attending LARP events in Auckland, such as the recent Great Exhibition game that was run at MOTAT in July 2011. I'm in the process of creating a character for the LARP game Teonn.
I'm also a member of Tangleball, a community workshop / makerspace / hackerspace in Newton, Auckland CBD. I run a weekly workshop there called Steampunk@Tangleball where we create steampunk props and weapons for our steampunk characters. On Sunday 14 August (yesterday), I hosted a sewing bee at Tangleball on behalf of the New Zealand Live Action Roleplaying Society. I'm hoping in future to hold LARP weapon-making workshops at Tangleball as well, crafting with liquid latex.
I'm also into Geocaching, which I explain away in-character as searching for temporal anomalies. |

| Welcome.
Hmm. Have I seen you at Auckgeddon?
I wish we had such a facility in Christchurch. Although I have started plans for a inter-dimensional garage/workshop. Kinda like the tardis.
Also the anomalies have nothing at all to do with the homemade nuclear reactor in my friends basement. Honest. >..>

Thanks, I have been roleplaying for quite a long time now, both paper- and computer-based. I've only recently started getting into actually dressing up for my roleplaying, though.

Hi Lucy, I've never been to Dunedin before, only as far South as Christchurch. I promise not to tell anyone that you said that you wish you lived in Auckland.

Yes, I have been once or twice. In fact, I was at Armageddon last year. I was all dressed in black, had a black fedora, and was towing around a black luggage bag that had a microphone stand on it. I was recording some video shots on the day. I can't remember which day I was there though.

Sweet, when you've finished building it, could you help us to make Tangleball inter-dimensional as well? We could always use the extra storage space inside.

Hehe, all those know-it-alls that keep saying "New Zealand is nuclear free, we don't have any nuclear reactors here". Little do they really know!

Interesting you should mention that. One of my favourite steampunk groups is the League of S.T.E.A.M. (I can't post external links on these forums yet, but do Google them, they're great!) I even used to have the League's leader Crackitus Potts as my avatar on Faceache at one time.

| Well I'm sure Tintangos paranormal containment vessels in his basement are not the source either, honest. >..>
But tim, I have a friends who has a friend, and they are working on Ghostbusters right now. So I was thinking soon may be a time to do a Ghostbusters group! |

You would be most welcome to join us. Steampunk@Tangleball is free, and runs every Tuesday evening from 8pm till about 10pm, depending on numbers present and what they want to do, we may finish earlier or later. It is held at Tangleball, 27 Edinburgh Street, Newton, Auckland CBD. It is on the corner of Edinburgh and Ophir Streets, which, if you think of a square, it would be at the opposite corner of the square to the intersection of Newton Road and Karangahape Road, where they meet with Ponsonby Road. So, yeah, pretty much close to the K' Road red light district. Hehe.
The Steampunk@Tangleball project drop-in evenings happen directly after the weekly Tangleball management meeting, during the "projects" part (the socializing part) of the weekly Tangleball meeting, so there will be plenty of other creative people already at Tangleball that you can bounce ideas off of. That is one of the great things about Tangleball, is that you tend to get surrounded by lots of creative ideas and input. And we have power tools! So females, particularly, if a man in your life (father, husband, whatever) doesn't let you use his power tools, then come on down to Tangleball and use ours. If you need help or some basic training in the operation of a particular tool, I'm sure someone will be happy to show you.

I forgot to mention earlier, yeah, my steampunk character is more like the British television show "Primeval" rather than Ghostbusters. I'm planning on building a steampunked GPS at some time, like this Arduino-based one from instructables.com...

No, I don't know Arduino ... yet. There are people at Tangleball who build with Arduino chips though. A couple of them have working RepRaps (3D printers) that they have built, and there are other robotic projects happening at Tangleball. I hope to get some help and input from them as I learn while doing.
