Hello~ *peeks* I have to confess, I've never cosplayed before... but I'm not new to it. I love the whole idea of it and I've always wanted to try it, but somehow never really had the money or the opportunity to do so sad

Please be kind to the newbie, and anyone got any advice on how best to kick start my new experience?

welcome to cnz!! (: money is always an issue in this hobby, that's one of the first lessons, haha.

my advice would be to start out simple and cosplay characters you love! it's always a better experience that way, in my opinion.

I would suggest starting with closest cosplays (using clothes you already have) or op shop cosplays (buying clothes-and altering if need be- from the local op shop). Also as Seraphik said, pick ones that are simple and characters you love!

Yo! Welcome! (Heh, not that I'm in the position to say that when I'm so new myself :3)

From what I understand, L is a REALLY easy person to cosplay as. It's just some bed head, white shirt and some loose jeans combined! In other words, a really lazy weekend XD

Cosplay doesn't have to be extravagant, there are some quite simple characters you can cosplay as. If you had a uniform in high-school and you still have it you could easily alter it to match any of the thousands of high-school anime characters there are out there! XD (Sometimes I can't even tell if someone's cosplaying or just on their way back from school, it's really awkward asking if you can take a photo of a someone who isn't cosplaying... They just give you this LOOK ^^;;)

But NZ school uniforms aren't very similar to Japanese ones, are they? o 3o With many alterations, maybe D;

Kairi/Selphie in KH2 have a pretty easy school uniform, you just need a light blue tartan skirt, a tie of matching material and a white blouse... or young kairi has just the white singlet and purple skirt, or even a simple white dress if you want to be Namine. Also a lot of the princesses are available to buy/hire from costume places...
Oh and welcome Very Happy

My first "cosplay" was using clothes I already had in my closet and then making a few alterations/additions to them.

we just drive down to a shop called savemart that sells second hand clothes and make anything else they dont have or we cant find. of course we have to make alterations to the clothes but thats ok cos its fun!
