suggest hair dye ...
Post By sakuramiyabi. 01/08/08, 01:19 pm

mmm im saving my long hair for suiseiseki this auckgeddon then chopping it off after ... but im thinking of dying it brown ... but problem is that my hair is REALLY black so it's hard to find hair dye that will actually stand out in my hair and i think i'd most probably have to go with two boxes since my hair is so long and thick ...

any suggestions?

should i even dye my hair or should i just invest in a long brown wig?

I'd suggest wig, store bought brown dyes usually aren't very effectively on black hair, and you'd have to bleach it at a salon. Might be wrong though =]

Seconding the wig.
My mum has dark hair and she used store-bought dye for her hair...
You couldn't see ANY of the dye XD

Hairdye also dries out your hair and makes it straw-like. D: The wig will be nice and shiny~

Dyeing your hair can be a pain if it's long~
I dye my hair on a regular basis because red-brown looks good on me and with my dark brown hair, only the permanent hair dyes work. (The ones that contain a bit of bleaching ingredient in them already.)
And if you're doing it yourself, you may end up with streaky patches, it will take about two hours to apply if you have thick and long hair, your hair will stink of the dye for about four days afterwards. Also, the dryness depends on if you do bleach your hair or not. Though it seems to very from head to head... I've never experienced any dryness, but I've never had mine bleached/coloured something weird like pink or green.

I know that some black hair turns brown if you try to bleach it, but that seems a bit hit and miss.

If it all sounds like too much trouble, I'd definitely try getting that wig.

Seriously: if you have black hair, the best you will get with dye is a tint. If you want your hair brown, you'd have to bleach it. If you don't want to go down the wig route, I would go to a hair salon to dye it professionally - they'll know how to get it both even, and the right colour.

I'm not 100% sure if it will work on black hair, but Schwarzkopf (http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:iuf7cKinomN6UM:http://forthelooksalonandspa.com/yahoo_site_admin/assets/images/schwarzkopf.329181122_std.gif recently released a type of hair dye which has bleach in it, which is about $13 each. So people with naturally dark hair can dye their hair lighter colours without bleaching it first.

That is really the only dye I would recommend (besides from tints like JVCA suggested). I wouldn't really recommend bleaching your hair straight out. Since your hair is black, it will turn orange. I speak from experience there. It probably wouldn't matter if you were just going to dye it brown overtop. But buying bleach then hair dye on top of that gets a bit expensive. It would probably be about the same as buying a wig. And with wigs you can get the exact shade you want. With dying your hair it's a bit hit and miss, especially the first few times you do it.

Just keep in mind that anything with bleach in it is permanent - even if the colour washes out, your hair will stay lighter.
