Forum based/online D&D campaign - Interested?
Post By creature124. 13/05/11, 07:27 pm

I have been toying with this notion for a while now - running an online D&D campaign.

My thoughts run like this - all of the our of combat storytelling/rp would all be done in a forum thread, probably on here but elsewhere is fine if the mods don't like it. Combat might be done in MapTool (a grid-based combat tool tailored to this sort of thing) is I can make it work, or simply in thread with me drawing a grid in paint and moving you around it myself, reposting it every time it get updated. Quite possibly the second - it may be a bit more work from me, but my last attempt at MapTool was a hillarious failure.

I would be looking for four people to start with, and I might expand it from there if it works well. Some D&D experience would be preferred, but not essential.

I make no guarantees at this point that this will actually happen - I am merely trying to get a feel for who/how many people are interested in this.

Thoughts, comments, questions, protestations, praise, adulation. Go.

I am very keen for this, sounds awesome! Very Happy As for experience I do have some with the the original D&D which I played old school style with pen/paper/dice back when I was in a D&D roleplaying group years ago, I think I even still have the books/stat sheets, lol. XD (Have also played a bit of Earthdawn too). I haven't had a go with it online although I did play Diablo/Diablo 2 back in the day. (Been waiting forever on Diablo 3 to come out. Okay, going slightly off topic here, sorry.). If you do this I will totally be up for it! Very Happy nodnod

I'm intrigued by the MapTool idea and am interested to know how the combat system would work, this sounds really interesting.

Keen if it's 3.5 - also, would you do the rolls for us? Or would we do our own?

It'd be 3.5, of course. If it is in maptool, I believe it supports rolling the dice on the client side. If it is done the other way, I would need to do the rolls - it would be far too easy to cheat that nobody would be able to resist. I would post the base roll and all the calculations though, so you can see what you are rolling and what your total was instead of just being told if you hit or miss.

BAHURP. This is creature124, by the way.

Okay. I think I'm gonna go ahead with this, and see how it goes. Tentatively, my players will be Zeorymer, RMD, sgb and Selphiroth - please confirm in thread that you wanna do this.

Sheets will be hosted on http://www.dndsheets.net/sheet.php - if you want to make your own character, rego on there and create it. We will be starting the game at level 5. Link it here when you are done.

If you are new, or want me to roll your character for some other reason, choose a class from the following (further info about each class is easy to find on google):

Barbarian
Bard
Cleric
Druid
Fighter
Monk
Paladin
Ranger
Rogue
Sorcerer
Wizard

I will create your character for you, and send you a PM outlining your abilities and sugar honey iced tea. If you don't want to write your own backstory, I'll also write you a paragraph description of your personality. Supporting new players is hard enough IRL, but we'll see how well it goes. When choosing your classes, keep in mind that at the very least you will want a Tank (Fighter, Paladin, Barbarian, maybe Ranger) and a healer (CLERIC, Druid, maybe bard).

The campaign is gonna take place in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting, in the Cormyr region. The party's backstory will be that you are a mercenary adventuring company on a recurring short-term contract with the Cormyran military.

I have no idea how this is gonna work, so I'll be figuring it out as I go along. if you have any questions, ask here or tweet at me or something.

Confirming.

Also, rolling up a druid for tanking/buffs.
Yeah I have no idea how to roll one of those. I'll wait and see what other people choose.

Confirming. Very Happy

Hmmm, I've always loved Paladins so I guess I'll go with a Paladin then. Gender: Female, Name:Gwendolyn 8D

Yeah I have no idea how to roll for this either, not certain what sheet to use either, not used to online D&D so can you create my character and roll for me please? puppyeyes Sorry for making you do this, I just don't want to physics this up. sweatdrop

So who else to confirm? We could probably use a Wizard and Rogue type characters to if we want to have a well rounded party, I should think. I'll switch to Wizard if nobody else wants to but I'll wait and see what everyone else chooses too.

*coughs politely* Um. if you look again at my post, you aren't one of the original 4 people I am testing this on, I'm sorry. If I do end up expanding this to take more players, I'll keep you in mind.

No probs, 3.5 is pretty different to AD&D or 2nd edition, so I don't mind rolling you up.

You won't strictly need an arcane caster - with only 4 players, it is pretty hard to cover all the bases anyway, so no sweat. The encounters will be tailors to your abilities, not your weaknesses.

so i have no idea what the majority of the previous 6 posts are talking about

does this mean it'd be wiser to watch this round and join in on any possible future rounds or is d&d intuitive enough that i will figure it out

don't really wanna be "that guy"

Have you done any online RP before? 90% of the stuff that character building is about is combat - and combat, once you get into it, is pretty intuitive. There is just a lot of numbers involved. If you are comfortable with the RP side of things (should be pretty similar to how other form RPs have been run, though with a few twists) you should be okay.
